Gustavo and Vinicius met each other from their time advising Justices at the Federal Supreme Court in Brazil and began to develop joint academic projects, such as research that resulted in the “Criminal Observatory” with statistical and content analysis on habeas corpus granted by the Supreme Court in recent years.
Gustavo returned to the attorney life in September of 2021 due to the retirement of Justice Marco Aurélio. In August of 2022, Vinicius joined the professional project to start a firm carrying both of their names and a common goal: offer an effective service based on consistent studies, solid field experience and data.
Thus, the firm connects the legal field experience amongst both partners with their practice as professors at universities in undergraduate, specialization, master’s and doctoral levels.
“I acknowledge, with satisfaction, that throughout the period in which he served in my Cabinet, occupying the position of Clerk, he stood out for his kindness in dealing with colleagues, carrying out assignmentes with dedication and singular proficiency, in contribution to the national legal system.”
Justice Marco Aurélio
“Dear Gustavo, I have recently reviewed your article “Racial discrimination” and found it most informative […]It is a creative and enlightening argument to explore the use of criminal law as an instrument for the promotion of human right”
David Harris, Professor, Harvard
The firm also operates in an advisory capacity with the objective of guiding the actions of individuals and companies through the preparation of legal opinions or permanent consultancy.
Also, the firm provides legal opinions for concrete cases, in which the academic background of the partners stands out, especially in subjects related to their main topic of research and scientific production. The opinion provides theoretical aid for the operation of partnered firms or to be submitted to the Court, presenting legal solutions to the problems in hand.
We understand that precision is a part of research. That’s why we use JURIMETRIA in the drawing up of procedures and pay constant attention to research. Gustavo Mascarenhas is one of the organizers of the Criminal Precedent Observatory at IDP, a research group dedicated to the analysis of former court decisions of the Federal Supreme Court year by year. We bring this technical tool to all the work in which we take part in, always combining empirical research with dogmatic content resulting in precise work.
The firm intends to operate in pro bono cases, without charging fees for consultancy of litigation, in situations of human rights violations and serious illegalities committed against people in vulnerable situations. In addition, pro bono work is included in cases of relevance for the establishment of theses, especially in amicus curiae on behalf of representative institutions. Pro bono action will take place at the discretion of the partners, with a joint decision made before the firm takes on the case.
